: I would like to congratulate you, Michael, on the steps you have taken to
: manage your diabetes.

: Sadly, we all know people such as the lady you describe. They live oblivious
: to the dangers they face from poorly managed diabetes. Even more sadly is
: that they will often quote some doctor as saying that all is well.

: There still is a popular belief that a diabetic diet should preclude you
: from eating "sweet things", and people simply do not relate to "all
: carbohydrates" such as a bowl of plain rice, plain potatoes or plain bread
: and think of them as also being bad.

: When the person is a distant friend, you can simply leave them to their
: beliefs. It is far harder to do that when the person is a close relative.

: You can also become - and have already - a valuable source of information
: and inspiration in the newsgroup, such as the people who have inspired me
: for over a decade.

In addition, some people, probably from looking around them, are under the
impressionthat diabetes is fatal no matter what you do. They don't really
get it that if they control their bgs they can have a longer, less painful
life, so say '"what the H-ll?"
