thanks Julie, I misstated it when I said 'group' in my second
paragraph. I do understand this is a newsgroup. I used to
participate when on some when I had a different ISP. I switched, they
didn't offer it and I got out of the flow, so to speak. I got
diagnosed with diabetes and wanted to find support and info,
community. And this list was suggested. I use comcast as my
provider. Do I get a news reader from them? Or is it software I
download?

Thanks for your reply.

Comcast stopped carrying the groups a few months ago, so you will need to either keep posting through Google, get another free news server, or pay for a newsgroup service. I have Newsguy, but Donna B and others speak highly of a cheaper one, which maybe they can post the name for you.

Dears,
I have sorted out a few things and finally found a solution. My thanks to the
discussions in asd about this problem and especially to Robert Miles and
Julie Bove.

My feed became very erratic lately.I missed whole threads. Some people's
contribution were not in my feed, so I only saw them when others
responded.Usenet is the ms-dos of pear to pear networking. It has a server
side and a client side.I only use the client side, the reader. Thus I use
outlook express to only read the posts. In principle if you have time enough
you could set up the server side yourself.

So in principle we are dealing with a distributed network and the problem
arises if a number of nodes in the network just refuse some posts.

What is happening lately is that a lot of spam is send via usenet.Copy right
material is posted. There are legal issues about the storage of information
for longer times. The first reaction of the normal providers was to filter
the spam. This became impossible, so they used black lists. The black list is
a too crude filtering which caused the erratic behaviour of usenet.Suppose
provider P1 has user U1 and user U2.The computer of U2 is infected with a
worm and turned ito a bot.The simplest thing to do for an other provider P2
is to block every thing that comes from P1.Thus also the posts of U1......
who is absolutely innocent and has nothing to do with the scam.

The situation now is that there is a new kind of privider that has a lot
more intelligent form of filtering, like neural network filtering, cluster
analysis, so all legal and normal posts are arriving. He provides long
retention times and fasts feeds.

Outlook express was conceived to be a news _Reader_ so old posts are
_Aways_ deleted from your local storage if the original post is nolonger on
the server.....So, you can download the posts from the server each day to
miss nothing but if the server itself has a retention time of 5 days to save
storage room and prevent trouble than also your local storage only has _The
Last 5 Days_ This makes things even more erratic if someone makes a post to
a thread that was dead for 6 days; you will nolonger see the older
contributions and the discussion becomes incomprehensible...

This is a behaviour of outlook express and other readers do have a solution
for this problem sometimes.

Here are my criteria.Ymmv.There are now usenet providers that permit
binaries for people who want music.I don't want music.I will buy an
occasional CD but for me most music is just pink noise.I only want the text
news groups. Thus I will use a limited number of downloaded Gigs.I'm willing
to pay for good service because I feel usenet is important for my health. It
keeps me informed and motivated. The best thing for me is thus a fast feed
combined with a prepaid access : you only pay for the Gigs you
downloaded. The amount you have paid will not be refunded but it will also
never expire.....I tried a few free providers but for me their service was
no good. Not even close. You get what you pay fro of course.

So I opted for usenet-news.net.It has lightning fast feed, has all the
relevant posts, does not miss a single thread.I'm very lucky with this
solution.Here is a list :
