I will do some research on ACE or ARB BP meds. I have been on atenolol for
25 years. I will discuss the effects of a beta blocker on T2 with my doctor.
I will study this first.
I would not stop the atenolol arbitrarily. I worked 20 years at a medical
school A doctor that I worked for asked me to stop taking my atenolol
because he wanted to test a new BP medicine he was developing.
I stopped cold as he asked me to. within 24 hours my heart rate began
accelerating. I was climbing some stairs at work and the last thing I
remember was knowing I was going to faint. I came back around at the ER. I
my physician asked me what had happened and I told him that my boss asked me
to stop taking the atenolol so he could test his new meds. My doctor got
really mad. He yelled at me for allowing some other doctor to alter his
treatment and then he yelled at my boss.
My physician made me promise never to allow the doctors at OHSU to use me
for testing again. He said they were more concerned with their grant money
than my health. I have always remembered that.

Susan,
I will have to put in a call to my doctor Monday. Yes, I am on a beta
blocker, atenolol 100 mg. I will have to ask my physician if there is
some
other type of BP med I could use.
Michael, you'll very likely find that you don't need one over time
with low carb, but if you do there are other options. BEWARE do NOT
stop the beta blocker without a very gradual tapering down. These drugs
have fallen out of favor and are not recommended for ht any more because
they cause diabetes, but your heart rate can become very irregular if
you don't taper off gradually.
Agreed, ACE or ARB are current #1 and #2 and have kidney protective
effects as well as the BP reduction. ACE may cause a cough but is
usually tried first as they are cheaper. Some authorities prefer ARB
for diabetics. Sometimes they are used for the kidney effect even when
BG isn't particularly high. There was talk of discontinuing my ARB
when my BG dropped significantly from the carb reduction, Dr wanted to
keep it up and in practice my BG went back up again a tad so we have
kept it on. Changing or crossing over meds can cause temporary swings
before things settle down again too.
