"Should" ? As in "That's what makes sense" ?

You're not talking Linux, Mac, or even XP.

This is Vista, in which Microsoft resurrects some of the
perversity we thought they had outgrown fifteen years ago.

Thank you, Wes. While I haven't had a chance to see how Justbob's suggestions may work, I KNOW its a Vista problem. As I said, the same set up running on my XP platform runs beautifully.

Michelle:

just to make you feel a little better about Vista, having spent my life tinkering with computers, going all the way back to the very first Texas Instruments and / or Commodore days (you're likely too young to remember that)... I'll go on record and say that Vista is CLEARLY the most stable operating system MS has ever offered since it first introduced Window's, and my computers run flawlessly. I can recall ONE blue screen on one occasion. I still have to reboot my XP machines regularly, while my Vista machines could run for months without a reboot.

So while there are set up issues and other conflicts to be resolved at first, my personal experience has been that once you get the system tweaked, it will run relatively trouble free thereafter. We often have multiple databases open on different platforms at the same time, with integration into Outlook from the databases, along with an explorer and often another mail program... and I've NEVER crashed any program, and certainly never encountered the blue screen of death.

So be of good heart... do yourself a favor and check the Netgear website for Vista compatibility for your particular router model.

If it proves compatible, then TURN OFF THE ROUTER, TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER, TURN OFF YOUR ISP CABLE MODEM (if you use cable, or dsl modem if you use dsl) then turn on your modem, then turn on your router, then boot your computer.

Then, assuming your connecting wirelessly, click the Vista (start) icon, click on "connect to"... and see if you can find your wireless connection in the list of available. If so, obviously just click on that and voila, you should be up and running.

Hope that helps.

Wes

Hi Wes,

I'm very glad to hear Vista will be a good platform after we work through the glitches. I'm going to save your message. Right now, my grandpa is just happy that going through the "run as administrator" works and he doesn't want to change anything. He's kind of a Nervous Nellie about such things and is afraid we'll "mess it up". But on down the line..... ;-)

Okay, I need one bit of clarification in your explanation though. I assume I should remove the Netgear programming before I do this? Following the Netgear directions, it has me install some programming, then at a certain point it has me plug in the network adapter (external).

Thank you!

Before I answer that, are you setting us for a wireless or hardwired connection?

Wes

Wireless.

Okay, allow me to ask a couple of questions.

When you go to the Vista machine and click on the start icon, then click on "connect to" does your in home LAN (whatever you've named it" show up?

Wes
