OT: Xmas Greetings


G'day G'day Folks,

May I wish my friends on ASD Xmas greetings. You know the sort of
thing, "Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year." I do so with some
hesitation since many of you wont be celebrating Xmas.
Some of you may even object to its celebration.


For my family it is it a time for a quiet get together. While we buy
presents for the grandchildren the adults mostly exchange a few cards
and some bottles of wine. The bottles of wine are because we aren't
too imaginative. We bought gifts for my caregivers and to my surprise
received gifts from them. They buy gifts for all their clients so
they told me. Those bags of blue-fleshed potatoes, jars of homemade
raspberry jam, bottles of wine etc are treasured just as much as some
other gifts.

This year we celebrated by having lunch with my in laws. Although
they are English and used to turkey at Xmas they have learnt that the
seasons are all wrong for that here. The turkey for sale is all
frozen since turkeys get fat in autumn and we're in mid summer.
Frozen turkey is not the same. Good on them to adapt so well.

They bought fresh salmon and baked it in a covered dish to keep it
moist. Beautiful. My MIL had bought some perlas potatoes. These are
specially bred to resemble Jersey Bennes. They're superb salad
potatoes and somewhat more blood glucose friendly than baked potatoes.
My wife steamed asparagus and we bought some of Robert and Gay's salad
from the Farmers' Market. Nothing is quite like their salad for the
variety of greens. She added avocado and some grated Pecorino.

We were meant to have capsicum sauce from Squirrel's Pantry with the
salmon but somehow that got left behind.

My FIL had bought some delightful Australian bubbly, YellowGlen
Yellow. Four stars. Lovely. He is a gracious host, serving some
Mission Hawkes Bay Merlot with the meal. A small glass of each was
sufficient for me to thoroughly enjoy. It was all very light and
elegant. The light part is essential given the possibility of high
temperatures in mid summer.
