I didn't know libraries were closing. But, I see less need for them
these days what with people reading books less and most people having
computers.

Libraries are increasingly about a *lot* more than books. They've long
had things like records & videotapes (& now CDs & DVDs).

There are plenty of people in the city without computers. Libraries
often have a bunch of kids or seniors in there using the public
computers.

The reason some may be closing is city budgets. Closing a branch comes
after reducing hours & staff & a lot of angst in the community -- &
usually a lot of outcry about it.

You might be surprised how much a part of a community a library is, even
if it's not something *you* are interested in.

Yes we have them here - also free to join.

Where we used to live they closed the nearest branches and sold off
the properties - common around there (hospitals too) due to the
ridiculous property prices. before they did that they kept reducing
the opening hours until no-one could get in to use them, then claimed
lack of demand.

The local one here is brilliant. The only bad thing about it is they
keep having book sales and my shelves are full enough already.
