My husband who doesn't have diabetes has gone to hospital in an ambulance
three times in the last year. Each time I have checked the IV to see if they
used dextrose. Each time it has been a .9% saline solution. No dextrose at
all. I have had 3 surgeries in the same time and they know I'm diabetic and
I have also been given saline without asking. Since my husband got saline,
it makes me wonder if it is standard practice here. I have been meaning to
ask but, you know, the best laid plans of mice and men.
The paramedics in this area use saline exclusively, in an effort to avoid
any unfortunate outcomes with sugar sensitive individuals.
They leave the final decision on hydration solution to the hospital once
you are delivered.
Their reasoning was good, since their 'pickups' are often unconscious.
Approaching your local fire department with this issue could bring about
a change in their policy as well, if you mention that litigation could follow
the administration of a "harmful" substance.
Worth a try for those concerned with what they might receive.
