Good luck with that! <sarcasm directed at the medical system, not at you> I was hospitalized for two days in January. I had my gall bladder removed and also had a kidney stone "pulverized." I was on a liquid diet, and *everything* I received was the type of food that I have completely avoided since being diagnosed. And, yes, diabetes was on my chart. The only items that were offered that did not conflict were tea and boullion. Other than that, they brought a horrible and very sweet concoction of fake fruit juices, jello (full-sugar), and similar items. I requested sugar-free jello, and the dietition told me that the hospital does not stock *any* sugar-free items. I asked my doctor about it, and he said he "couldn't do anything" because food was under the control of the hospital. If I had been there for more than two days, I would have had friends bring in some contraband food. It should come as no surprise to learn that my BG was higher during that time than it had been for the previous four years (and immediately declined as soon as I got home and prepared my own food). I had learned previously that I could not eat in the hospital cafeteria when I visited friends. The only thing they offered that I could eat was a green salad (to which I would add a hard boiled egg, also available). Everything else was fried, breaded, "chock full" of carbs.

I know, unless you arrange beforehand to have your doctor write orders specifying sugar free Ringer's lactate, you get all sugar on your plate and in your IV.

I had surgery last Sept. and the ENT who did it is a low carber; he was concerned about my wanting sugar free IV until I told him I keep my bg in a narrow, low range. He knew that the lactate would be converted to glucose as needed by my body.

I'll have to check on the sugar free Ringer's lactate. That would have been a big help, despite all the inappropriate food they served. This was an admission directly from the ER, and (of course) my own doctor was out of town. The surgeon I used is excellent, but I had not had any prior conversations with him about diet other than telling him that I have diabetes and a discussion of diet. He listed me for "diabetic" diet, but that did no good. However, I did not know about the sugar free Ringer's.

Thanks,
