In Las Vegas a big gastro clinic was re-using syringes and failing to
properly clean their equipment. There have been 9 people infected with
either Hep C or HIV that the county health dept can prove the clinic was
responsible; and 200 or so more in which they suspect the clinic is
responsible. 50,000 people were sent notices to get tested.

I would guess that happens a lot more often than we ever hear about. ;-(

It makes you wonder. In this case, the medical malpractice had gone on for
4 or 5 years--which is why such a big number of people were contacted.
However, since Hep C (and HIV) is slow to develop, and in some cases the
general practioner failed to report the diagnosis, nobody caught it until a
patient who had already been diagnosed with Hep C was treated there, and
several people who were treated the same day as he was became positive.
Besides feeling sorry for the patients who became infected, I also felt
sorry for the patient of origin. He knew he was positive, took many steps
in his personal life to insure he didn't infect anyone else and reminded the
doctors of the fact, although it was in his medical records--and he
shouldn't have to. He was pretty broken up about it. After that, they
began finding others, who were not associated with his particular case.
