Would one of the experts here please explain why that is?
In the Westminster system, as used in the UK, here, NZ and
several other places, the Prime Minister cleans out his
office immediately after declaration of the polls and the
new incumbent moves in on day one. As do all the other
newly-elected.
Why is there such a long gap? Maybe it was sensible in the
days when the new Senator for California had to sail via the
Horn to get to Washington DC to vote in the Senate, but it
seems both unnecessary and dangerous now.
A week is a long time in politics. Two months can be an
eternity.
They've got to have time to shred documents and figure out whom they're
going to pardon as they head out the door.
They're called "lame duck," but I think that's insulting to water fowl.
