: It can also be Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. Commonly called Ear
: Rocks. Quoting from my physiotherapist's handout:
: "It is though to be due to debris that has collected within a part of the
: inner ear. While the debris can be thought of as ear rocks the formal name
: is otoconia. They are small crystals of calcium carbonate derived from a
: structure in the ear called the utricle. While the saccule also contains
: otoconia, they are not able to migrate into the canal system."
: There are several causes of it but "old age" is one of them. I was having
: these periods of light headedness on standing and put it down to low blood
: pressure until I saw an article in our local paper about it. The article
: said there were several physios locally who could treat it. By luck my
: physio had a colleague who treated it. Took about 20 minutes (sometimes a
: second treatment is necessary) followed up by exercises.
: My husband's doctor wasn't pleased when I mentioned the physio. He said he
: had exercises to cure it. But in my experience, I would take the treatment
: again if it became necessary.
: For those who can't find a physio trained to treat it, the exercises are
: called "Brandt-Daroff Exercises.
: The pamphlet says certain modifications may be necessary to cope with the
: dizziness. Use 2 or more pillows at night and avoid sleeping on the "bad"
: side.(I had it in both ears. LOL) In the morning it says to get up slowly
: and sit on the edge of the bed for a minute. Avoid bending down to pick up
: things, and extending the head to get something out of a cabinet.
: That's the bare bones of a 4 page pamphlet. It was issued by Northwestern
: University, copyright 2001.
: Hope this helps some of you. It sure helped me.

I have had 2 episodes of that, which I think of as sand in the inner ear.
Once, hanging kind of withmy head upside down seemed to work at the
suggestion of a doctor I met at physical therapy when I was workign n my
shoulder and the other by a strange treatment , which also was a useful
diagnosis too for the ENT doctor. I was placed almost flat and twisted my
body while she held my head the shook it this was repeated four times as
each was a quarter turn. It worked and the sickening dizziness that
atually led to nausea stopped almost instantly! Weird condition.
Wendy
I had the same treatment. As you say condition stopped almost immediately.
