Yes, and for an animal whose natural food is grass, switching them to eating
corn in a feedlot creates illness, makes the animal get overly fat overly
quick, and their intestines turn extremely acidic. That is where these
monster E-coli strains of infections come from. The animal fed on grass,
would not get that way.
When they kill the animal they have to be extremely careful, because the
tiniest bit of intestinal material touching the meat can fill it with
E-coli. But the corn lobby has all kinds of perks from the government and
feeding cows corn to fatten them before slaughter has become the regular way
of doing things.
If you can find grass fed beef, it is healthier...... the animal was
healthier and so will you be. We have a butcher locally that sells grass
fed beef, but supermarkets all sell meat that was fattened in disgusting
feedlots where the animals are up to their knees in poop, and fed corn that
makes them sickly. But grass fed beef is more expensive. Fattening them
up on corn translates to money, unfortunately.
Any beef that enters my kitchen now is grass fed, as is the buffalo. I
eat about the same amount of both now. I've begun moving into grass-fed
pork (aka wild boar), which is yummy, and grass-fed lamb is next to
come. I pay more for it, and I need to use my chest freezer to store it
since I have to get it mail order, but I feel better about the meat I
eat, and it tastes SO MUCH better than the supermarket stuff.
Currently I get my beef from La Cense (http://www.lacensebeef.com/) and
my buffalo and wild boar from Buffalo Gal (http://www.buffalogal.com),
but once I eat through enough of that I'm going to try Slankker's
Grass-Fed Meats (http://www.texasgrassfedbeef.com/). They have beef,
bison, lamb, pork, goat, and more. I love goat.

Thanks so much for the leads! We have a local store that sells grass fed meats. I haven't been there yet, but plan to check them out soon. I was especially interested in the pastured turkeys mentioned on that last link. Naturally, since thanksgiving is coming, I was curious. Locally I can get a butterball for 99cents a lb. A local grocery store is giving a free turkey to anyone who spends $300 between now and thanksgiving (easy to do). I would love to buy a pasture raised turkey, but at $6 per lb. it would be a bit prohibitive for someone who is retired and on a fixed income.
