If I had a choice, I would switch cable companies, but I don't and DSL
and satellite are not options.
I do have a choice (DSL, which I have; 2 cable companies, one of which
is Comcast) but it wouldn't do much good to switch around --
ISP-newsgroup service seems to be going the way of the 300 baud modem.
And then there's changing my email for everything....what a bore & a
chore. BTDT when I had a lot fewer people & subscriptions & groups to
notify.

is and just set up a separate one for your news groups. I have my e-mail
with one program with my regular ISP and my news groups on Entourage with a
munged address. It is set up so that I can send but nothing is set-up to
receive. Works great.
