I have been a type 1 diabetic since 1958. Health is reasonably good
and hba1 at last chack was 7.1
I saw the diabetic nurse for routine check-up yesterday and the
results of a blood test taken a month ago were OK except for one
thing (which I havenever heard of before).
She referred to Creatinine and said my count was 130 - when I asked
what this was about she referred to the kidney function, and said the
normal count was 80.
I have now read several articles about this e.g., on
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creatinine
(as I say, I have never even heard of this before), and it appears
this is a problem with diabetes that can have serious consequences.
The article doesn't say the normal count is 80 as the nurse said,
but 60-110 ?mol/L in a man (although I also read it tends to be lower
in vegetarian (as I am)s, so my count should definitely be lower than
130).
I have to do a urine specimen and return it to the surgery next week.
Phew! Is this anything to be concerned about?

Hi David,
I admire you, what a wonderfull control you have and over such a prolonged
time :) You must be a man with very high standards, also for himself.....
Here is a site with information about labtests. It has elaborate explanations
of what it means, how it's used and a lot of faq's :
http://www.labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/creatinine/glance.html
They also have the reference values in conventional as well as SI units here
:

My 2 cents :
relax a bit you seem to have a very competent medical team which is right on
top of it.
Thanks for sharing, it gives me hope that I can surrvive this condition too
:)

David: As someone who has lived with kidney failure for
15 years (dialysis and the last 13 with a kidney
transplant), do as Gys says and take a deep breath.

Your doctors have requested a urine sample and will do
other simple blood tests because a creatinine reading of
130 by itself may be no more than a an anomaly. Simply
re-hydrating with adequate amounts of water can bring
creatinine back in range. Strenuous exercise shortly
before a test can also elevate creatinine. Those are not
the only things that can cause a higher reading.

Other blood tests for B.U.N (blood urea nitrogen) and
albumin or micro-albumin that are out of whack while
creatinine continues to be elevated would be a more
precise method of determining if there is problem, and
if there is, if it is transient or needs watching.

You mention "a" urine specimen. Is this a 12 hour or 24
hour collection of all of your urine? That is considered
the gold standard test to determine what is actually
going on in your kidneys if they suspect something.
There are different types of collection analysis for
different medical conditions: kidney and thyroid being
just two of them.

Take a deep breath, and take it one step at a time.
