Fortunately my mother never gave a bugger about low fat, she's still
pretty sharp for 93 though she is gradually wearing out now.
My old man had heart disease all his life, stuffed his face with lard
and lived into his eighties.
Makes you wonder, don't it?
Absolutely! I had a great aunt (long-time deceased) who in the 1970's was
put on a low cholesterol diet because of her high cholesterol. She was
very
stringent about her diet, and ended up eating little fat or protein. Her
sister (my grandmother, also deceased now) said that the longer she
maintained the diet, the more she couldn't think until she became very
senile.
Not good.
I've bought her some more cheese, just to be on the safe side <G>
Actually I got some (creamed) goat cheese as she wanted something
different from her usual cottage cheese, and some Brie in case she
didn't like the goat cheese. And I'm eating them myself, just in case.
Poor old dear, she was having real difficulty breathing going up a
slight hill today, I don't think she will be with us much longer - but
her brain's still sharp.
Sorry to hear of your mom's health problems, but she sounds like she's doing
quite well for 93. Imho, there is nothing more interesting than listening
to the thoughts, stories, and opinions of a sharp elderly person. There's a
lot to be learned there. Keep feeding her the cheese Trink.
As an update on my living grandmother (85 yo) who I recently convinced to
quit taking her statin and stop eating high carb low fat diet to one that
has more fat and protein because of low energy levels and increasing memory
problems: (Mostly she modified from a very carby breakfast of cereal, skim
milk, half a banana, and fruit juice to bacon, eggs, fruit juice and
toast--yes it would still kill me, but....) Slowly but surely, she has
regained her energy and her memory IS improving. I am just tickled pink.
When she's feeling good, she's a feisty old gal who is a real hoot. :-)
