It just BLOWS my mind. It's almost as though they're saying "we know
we're shortening their life, but we want them to have the carbs and
not
make it to rough on them making changes".... "so we'll just cut it
back
a
little and give them drugs to help".

Doesn't make any sense to me. Bizarro World!
"Fortunately the patient died before we could tell him he was
terminally ill"
it's the mindset some have. I guess if they've only seen what happens
to people who eat the healthy Low Fat High Carb Diet they're going to
assume all diabetics will get complications and then die young so
there's no point upsetting the poor dears
http://www.diabetes-stories.co.uk/index.asp
Unfortunately, it is not only diabetics who are harmed by the "low fat"
high
carb doctrine. My grandmother is 85, has been taking a statin for 25
years
and eating low fat high carb. Her memory and energy levels have been poor
lately. Concerned, I suggested she stop her statin, and low and behold,
she
did seem to improve a bit. Then my grandfather told me, she had been
having
episodes of what could only be reactive hypoglycemia mid-morning--but of
course, they weren't sure what had caused it. I knew. For years they
have
followed the American Heart Associations low fat, high carb guidelines.
Their breakfast is this: a bowl of shredded wheat, skim milk, part of a
banana, and juice. I told her she could avoid those episodes by eating
eggs, bacon, or cheese at breakfast. Guess what? She seems a bit more
clear-headed now that she's been doing that for a few days--clear-headed
enough to tell me that she realized she really hadn't been eating much
protein at all in her efforts to follow her prescribed diet. Auuughhh!
I doubt we'll be able to turn the clock back so that she has a mind of a
70
years old, but I don't see how she's been able to function as well as she
has under the circumstances.
<sigh>
Fortunately my mother never gave a bugger about low fat, she's still
pretty sharp for 93 though she is gradually wearing out now.
My old man had heart disease all his life, stuffed his face with lard
and lived into his eighties.
Makes you wonder, don't it?
Absolutely! I had a great aunt (long-time deceased) who in the 1970's was
put on a low cholesterol diet because of her high cholesterol. She was very
stringent about her diet, and ended up eating little fat or protein. Her
sister (my grandmother, also deceased now) said that the longer she
maintained the diet, the more she couldn't think until she became very
senile.
Not good.
