I realize that the hbaic test is for checking the management of one's
sugar for the past 2 or 3 months & that the 12 hour fasting blood test

is about 85. I don't do any overt diet management for diabetes & am
only concerned as my current doctor is wanted me to control my
"diabetes".

The question is how valid is the 12 hour fasting glucose test? Or is
my digestive tract a bit "slow" as I did have a glass of wine with
dinner & ice cream for desert prior to doing the fasting & testing..

Your hgba1c can be perfectly normal, while some of your BG numbers go
into
diabetic territory--which your FBG is doing. The reason? Besides the
fact
that your red blood cell turnover may not be typical, often people who
have
high BGs also experience low (or lowish) BGs, resulting in a normal
average
as demonstrated by the hgba1c. That is why it is NOT used for diabetic
diagnosis. However, your FBG is diagnostic. Your doctor is not wrong.

While for a few people, the FBG is the first glucose-related test to
become
abnormal, for a majority of people, their post-prandial (after eating)
BGs
become abnormal first. To see exactly what your BGs are doing get a
glucometer. At one hour after a meal, your BG should be less than 140;
at 2
hours less than 120.

Yes checking the postprandials is essential, my FBG is still "normal"
but my postprandials ran from 60 to 210: because (presumably) the lows
counterracted the highs my A1c was only 5.3

Curiously when I got my postprandials under better control my A1c was
still 5.3, and when I got them under better control still it went up
to 5.6.

A1c correlates well with average BG when it's high but poorly when BG
is generally low and especially when it's particularly uneven.

Thanks everyone. Guess I'll go to Walmart to get a meter, brrrrr. Didn't
see a glucose meter at the hmo pharmacy when I went to get a vision check.

Now have been told that I have cataracts &, so far, the web pages say that
cataracts can be caused by diabetes.

Looks like my 72 yr old body is deteriating faster & faster...

Don't despair! There is much you can do to deal with the diabetes and
significantly slow or halt its progression. We're here to help.

very few that really support or provide info. This group don't have the
nasty vicious attacks like in "sci.med.cardiology" or "sci.med.vision"
or even a couple of the "rec.music.xxxxx" newsgroups.
then some groups just say "google" it for info as if current info is not
posted & technology/info haven't changed in years/decades.
