However, aiming towards that is a worthy goal provided that
it doesn't become an obsession and that there is no stigma
attached to accepting that medication may be needed for the
individual.
This is something that our diabetes educator has tried to impress upon us.
The worthy goal and the one we *should* aim for is the appropriate diet
and
exercise and hopefully a pancreas that is a little happier, but over time,
it most likey is going to burn out. There's no shame in medication, none.
There's a fine balance for us all and each one of us is as individual as a
snowflake. I'm learning that more and more and more.

I disagree with the idea that eventually the pancreas is inevitably going to
"burn out". I strive to keep my BGs normal in hopes that it won't. It's
not an outlandish idea. A man who used to post here regularly by the name
of Roger Zoul was diagnosed 20 years and has had no progression in his
diabetes (unless something has changed since he quit posting in the last few
months). He maintained with diet and exercise only. While it is true that
some may progress nonetheless, it apparently isn't inevitable, and we can
certainly delay any progression significantly.
I've been at this nearly 3 years, and while that's not much compared to
Roger's 20, my numbers are very stable.
