<useful stuff snipped, thanks Frank as always>
I first happened across Evening Primrose Oil as a potential treatment
for PMS. It seemed to work for my ex but I couldn't persuade her to
keep taking it as she refused to believe there was anything wrong,
even when she was hitting me and throwing stuff around the room.
I think the next thing I read was a far out theory that schizophrenia
was due to a defect in cell wall metabolism, where the cells leaked
and allowed dopamine to escape into area it didn't ought to be.
This proved not to be nearly as cranky as it sounded, but
oversimplified. Now I need to read up this paper and some other
references as no doubt there is several orders of magnitude more
information than when I last looked.
Now I'm wondering just how many of my changes are directly due to the
BG control and what is due to the improved lipids that the controlled
BG has given me.
About fifteen years ago I started developing some possibly arthritic
mild joint pains. My doctor very helpfully diagnosed me as getting old
and I get used to the idea and take pain killers if they got too
annoying. So I tried taking big spoonfuls of cod liver oil to see if
that did any good. It didn't, but I was surprised by the unexpected
discovery that to a mild but definitely useful degree it stabilised my
somewhat erratic moods and ability to concentrate on the task at hand.
I later came across the fish omega-3 research and found that omega-3
rich fish oil worked a bit better at lower doses than the cod liver
oil.
Both of them also had the unexpected effect of substantially improving
the resistance of my skin to burns, blistering, and bruising. That
includes sunburn. It also removed the dry flakiness my skin used to
suffer from, giving it instead a slightly oily sheen, and a more
pleasant feel. The final unexpected effect on my skin was to improve
its impermeability to water. That was demonstrated by my being able to
lie in a hot bath for longer before my finger tips started to crinkle
up.
Hmmm, once again I'd assumed the improvements in my skin were a direct
result of the BG control, so maybe they're also due to the improved
lipids and improved diet.
I hoped that these good effects on the skin were also happening
internally, e.g. in improving the strength and health of my arteries
and veins. In fact the reduction in susceptibility to bruising
suggested that my capillaries had been strengthened.
So ever since then I've been a fan of taking fish oil for brain and
skin health, and hopefully more :-)
I still prefer the entire fish
smoked salmon for breakfast
haddock for dinner
sesame prawns later
just have to stop myself blowing bubbles
