You have my sympathy. I've been running Linux exclusively for over five

Absolutely rock solid and much more secure. BTW - several friends have
asked, and I've advised them against vista - too much likelihood of
serious problems. The two local compter stores in town also advise
against it.

Now see, I called you on this crap in the Vista NG ray. You may like it for your own use, but face it, Linux is basically crap on the desktop,

<blink> what as opposed to the virus spreading offers that abound in any Microsoft operating system. ROFPMP

We've already established that with MS having the highest market share in the operating system arena, it's going to be the most targeted. The other 2 offerings aren't worth the time because they are simply not worth the effort. The are also viruses out there for the other 2. I know for a fact that there is an anti-virus program available for Linux. So this statement is meaningless.

and in a corporate environment as anything but a server role. Obviously you've never tried to run it with multiple processors. Not multiple cores mind you, but true SMP. APIC support for SMP is non existent. Which under the Win OS offerings work flawlessly.

stop it, stop it, stop it. this is soooo funny.

Ah, so the power management works under Linux eh? Funny, I always had to shut it down manually. It says it does not support power management under SMP as the kernel loads. Also always had to put the "noapic" switch in lilo, so where exactly have I erred?

SAMBA still doesn't support Kerberos.

Good lord. Do you mean people still use kerberos?

It still doesn't support the SMB standard.

No useful productivity suite.

aahahahahahahaha, suites are by definition not productive. Please do not tellusthat MS Office is anything but a steaming pile of excrement.

Well seeing that Office is the de facto standard in the corporate arena, it would appear that THIS statement is wrong. Granted the interface for 2007 bites, but just because YOU think it is crap, doesn't mean everyone shares your view, now does it?

Let me tell you about the last major MS Vs Linux task I under took. "We have 800 images files that need to be converted to a maximum of 140 pixels in any dimension and it is going to take us six people and six working for a week to do it under MS OS and applications" Took me a whole hour from start to finish on Linux and that was a Pentium 1 120 machine grunting away. Shrug.

Irfanview will do that in under 5 minutes, so you were apparently using the wrong tool. Irfanview is also free, so this point is moot.

With less than 1% market share of the desktop operating system, Linux is even more of a niche product than Mac is, and is even less user friendly. So please don't come in here and try to say that Linux is an alternative for regular users, because you know damn well it isn't.

Have you ever done desktop support?
Ever been out and taught the great unwashed how to use computers?
Thought not.

Oh darn, well I guess you got me there bright boy. Let's see I've been doing this stuff since 1981. I have a Masters degree in Computer Science. I have my MCSE, MCT, CCNP, CCND, CNE, Network+, and A+ certifications. I have taught Network+, and A+. I have along the way worked for Unisys, DEC, Compaq, HP, and GE Information Services. I have been on site at DC Superior Court. There I set up a Dell Network Appliance which was fun as it used a mixture of 2000/IIS, RedHat/Inktomi, and Solaris/Oracle. Also been on site at US Marshall Service, DEA, US Tax Court, OSHA. Designed, and set up a data center from scratch for Genetic Therapy (Novartis subsidiary). Have implemented and run more mixed networks than you have probably ever seen. Done support for the University Club, NIRS, and other small networks/companies. I've seen and done more than you have on your best day. So don't even presume to think you know MY background. So unless you can even come close to things I have done, you need to take a seat in the back with the other wannabes.
