Thanks for the recommendations. I need to look around more, not just at what
I've been using! (HP)
Check out some of the review sites, including www.pcpro.co.uk (but be
quick it used to time you out unless you register)
HPs are OK as long as the drivers work and don't make any other
drivers or programs fall over, the cheap ones can have very high
running costs though (true for all makes) however my friend who runs
the local print shop has a down on HP and will only use Canon or Xerox
(big huge giant industrial strength floor-standing beasts)
Epsons have a good reputation for print quality but I don't think
their lasers are available in the US. Brother and Konica Minolta also
have their fans.
Basically you cannot have all the following - cheap, low running
costs, high quality, fast - but you can get two or sometimes three out
of four <G> it's a case of trying to find unbiased reviews, which have
relatively accurate page cost predictions
I am a bit limited by weight -- I need to be able to wrestle the beast at
least minimally, which means no 75lb behemoths, but 45-50 is doable. That
cuts out the color-laser-all-in-ones I've looked at (I'd like to offload my
copier & save table space).
Once that Xerox is in everything can be accessed from the front (and
top) so the wrestling is a one-off deal <crosses fingers> I'm not fond
of things that do more than one thing at once, they're seldom best of
breed and if one part breaks the whole thing can be down whereas with
separates you can replace the scanner and printer separately.
I do have a few hundred pages of time (mostly of black -- gotta do more
grayscale & conserve my colors) to research/buy/get delivered, but I can
shilly-shally *too* long!
I remember my first LaserJet -- a real tank! And power-mad -- I put in a new
circuit (home office) because of it.
Them was the ones. Quality and speed are now an order of magnitude
better.
I hadn't thought of plugging the new printer into my router -- but "2
computers" was supposed to be a *temporary* (overlap) situation that seems
to be stretching out too long <sigh>. Mostly I only do "network" so I can
have wireless access to my internet connection.
Many printers are now network aware, much easier than plugging into
the computer separately and you get a web-page to access it from, just
need to give it an IP number on your subnet.
I had two Epsons, a B&W laser and my trusty photo printer,
unfortunately the control panels clashed so I had to install them on
separate computers. Hint: do NOT do as I did (not enough coffee), I
installed the Xerox as a shared network printer on both computers -
and ended up with two printers neither of which worked . . . either
install as shared with drivers only on one box, or install as not
shared with drivers on all boxes which can access it <duh>
Whatever you choose, best of luck!
