Among the primary risk factors for type 2 diabetes are being
overweight, sedentary, over the age of 45 and having a family history

An even better test of risk is a few bg measurements, for crying out loud.

And just how many non-diabetics do you know that have meters to test their
BGs, or even know about such meters?
In the UK, many pharmacies will do a free occasional test service,
which is fairly widely advertised.
There's also occasional opportunities to be casually tested at country
fairs, etc - I'm signed up to help with such an event at the local
Indian Mela in the summer, and the local DUK group is talking about
hiring the town hall for a day and getting several groups in to talk
about diabetic health. The local hospital is sending some nurses armed
with meters.
Having said that, I had been tested two or three times before dx with
what I now recognise as diabetic numbers - including a 240 fasting
whilst pregnant - that nobody did anything about, and I didn't know
enough to worry about.
