Re: Bad Doctors

I wonder how many of the doctors we are hearing "horror" stories about are doctors that are working for HMOs or some other similar organizations?

Not just HMOs. I've dealt with different kinds, and unfortunately it's pretty prevalent across the board. Had some good docs in each, and some that were dumb as stumps. Some of it does have to do with region. Where I was at in really rural TN, the money just wasn't there to attract the best. A great deal were doctor's that had immigrated, and were trying to become current with American standards. I don't want that statement to be misconstrued as being racist, discriminatory, or anything like that. They were very nice people, and I have no doubt whatsoever about their dedication. But it's sad when the patient knows more about many of the medicines than they do. The superstars will go where the money is. It's like me when I did the Network Engineer bit. DEC paid more than Unisys at the time, so guess who got my services?

There are exceptions. Some are just natural healers, and could care less about the money. Conversely there are those that just want to collect their check, and will provide just enough to their patients to keep their job. The medical co-op there where I was is a prime example. You had no choice, got assigned a doctor, and had to deal with him/her whether they were an ass of not. Only alternative was to drive 40 miles or more one way to Kingsport, Greenville, or Morristown. This unfortunately was not an option for those well below the poverty line.

I am very lucky right now inasmuch that I can pick who **I** want, don't have to worry about referrals and have no co-pays except for meds. Not all are this lucky, and unfortunately run into those ragbag doctors that generate those horror stories...:(
