Be patient. If you push it and get an injury, you'll be further behind. If
you push it and make walking punishment, you'll stop walking.
Find your natural level and stick with it.
I think this is the most important aspect, not comparing yourself to anyone
else, a "program", or anyone else's opinion.
I do more than I "have to" but I'm enjoying it. I've backed off when it
wasn't fun, or I felt sub-par for a while (more than a week's slump!), or if
I just "didn't want to do that event" for any reason. This keeps it
enjoyable.
I don't compare my exercise to anyone else's (though I do look at my race
results & see how I'm doing in my age group!) and I don't do something
"better" just because it might be "better for my bg" if it would be like
being back in boarding school (mandatory exercise at certain times).
I started slow & easy & worked up from there as I felt better & felt like
doing more. I didn't have a "goal" or a "program", I just "went". I have
some goals now -- certain events or distances -- but I'm not going to beat
myself up over it if I end up not doing them or if I do them but fall short
of a performance goal that I might have had.
So far this has worked for me (nearly 10 yrs) for bg & weight control & I'm
still having fun (most of the time :-)).
bj
(now if only I could talk myself into enjoying a bit of weight training,
balance exercises, & way more stretching.....)
