Re: A heart attack or something else...

I didn't label this OT because I know many in this group have had heart issues and I figure a lot of you could relate. It's actually kinda funny.

As many of you know I had what turned out to be a mild MI back in April which is when I found out I had diabetes. I KNOW what a heart attack feels like and for me it felt nothing at all like indigestion which I get once in a while.

So yesterday afternoon, I started getting a rather sharp, not severe pain in the dead center of my chest. It seemed to happen when I moved, stood or twisted. The pain only lasted a fraction of a second each time. The problem is, it wouldn't go away. I still had it this morning, so I thought I'd see if activity made it worse. I did my usual half hour of intense walking on the treadmill and lifted weights for awhile. No pain at all, no shortness of breath....felt great. A little while later it came back. I almost decided to call my cardiologist, but it just didn't FEEL heart related. I took some Zantac and a couple of simethicone pills and about a half hour later, I let loose with a truly monumental belch. The pain went away completely and hasn't returned.

I've heard stories about people going to the ER with supposed heart attacks only to be informed they had gas/indigestion. I had always thought it quite silly, but now that I've experienced a heart attack I can understand the concern one would have with any pain in the chest.

Has this type of thing ever happened to any of you?

John C.

John,

My heart problems began when I was 15 with bacterial endocarditis, which eventually got me sent to a pediatric cardiologist a few months later where I underwent testing like no one should ever have to endure. I had my first panic attack after a bone marrow test in my chest. Had no earthly idea what was happening to me, and why the doctors were not concerned I couldn't breathe. LOL

I was allowed to do whatever I could from that point on, allowing my body to be my guide, and by 1980 I was having to use nitro for the angina. I had to learn the difference between the two chest pains at that time. Nitro has no affect on gas pains, so a little white pill could take care of answering my question. A heart cath in 82 showed my heart still in good condition, and still is today.

I've not been on nitro for a long time now, about the mid 80s I guess. I *have* had some chest, neck, arm pains that caught my attention, but I sat here and waited it out. It does get confusing and scary, though, doesn't it.
