There are no nutrient rich grains, as compared to veggies and fruits.
Wrong.
Whole grain brown rice provides 15 essential nutrients, including
dietary fiber, B vitamins and folate, Vitamin E, minerals, potassium
and it's also a good source of antioxidants and phytonutrients
Are you comparing it to a soft drink?
Sure, Jim, that's exactly what I'm doing. LOL
Try broccoli, chard, etc. We all know
there are nutrients in whole grains. The issue is how to maximize good
nutrients while keeping calories low. I don't think whole grains score very
well.
How low do you want your calorie intake to be?
It's not that I need to make calories low. It's that I want to get a lot of
good stuff when I consume them. It's the good nutrients per calorie that
matters.
If you're an active
person surviving on just broccoli, chard, etc. you'd better buy them
by the bushel. What are you supplementing your veggies with? Fat,
protein, soft drinks?
Definitely fat. I put a little extra virgin olive oil on my salads and use
it in many other ways. I have nuts every day. I eat cheese. I make the
world's best espresso drinks and get all those antioxidants and more with no
calories. I put milk in my cappucinos. I even eat a tiny bit of whole
grains, mostly as low-carb tortillas--they're great for keeping the bacon
and tomato in my BLTs. Oh, and I use wheat bran to coat certain things where
a recipe calls for flour.
All grains are calorie dense, though, with sparse nutrient content per
calorie.
Wrong.
As she said, as compared with veggies and fruits.
I eat lots of veggies and fruits and I eat some whole grains. I'm
also very active and couldn't survive, nor would I want to, on an
austere diet of only veggies and fruits. From reading here, many
posters don't eat much fruit, either.
True. I have an orange once in a while, 'cause I grew up with orange trees
in my yard and they are something I love. But fruit mostly means berries and
a little melon to me.
Thing is, adding whole grains to my diet wouldn't improve it much at all and
would boost insulin requirements. Seems like a bad deal to me.
