Re: Anyone have experience with Glipizide?

My understanding is that Glipizide, unlike metformin, is relatively
quick acting and also clears from your system relatively quickly. My
experience, taking the dosage you are taking, John, although mine is
the Extended Release version, is that if I miss a dose, my numbers
may be 10-20 point higher 12 or 24 hours later.

When I was taking 5 mg 2X/day, and tried to cut back, I found that
if I took my morning pill, and skipped the evening dose, then the next
morning my numbers would be about10-20 points higher. If I took my
evening dose, and skipped the morning dose, then the next evening my
pre-dinner number would be higher by about the same amount.

The only problems I have had with lows with Glipizide have involved
having 2 or 3 glasses of wine or beer. If I do that I have to be very
careful to avoid lows. Processing alcohol temporarily derails the
liver's ability to counteract low blood sugar by releasing sugar into
the blood; that combined with Glipizide stimulating the production of
insulin, makes lows more likely. Result is I have learned to be very
careful and monitor blood sugar on the rare occasions when I drink
more than one glass of wine.

I'm currently on what I've been told is a small dose of Glipizide. I
take 2.5 mg two times a day before breakfast and dinner. When
diagnosed in April, I was put on twice this amount in addition to
Avandia. As my numbers improved, my medication was cut.

As it is now, I'm achieving near normal numbers. FBGs are generally in
the mid 80s in the morning and PPs are usually under 100 after 2
hours.

My question is: What kind of BG rise can I expect if I were to go
completely off the Glip? I realize this may be an impossible question
to answer, but am just looking for general impressions.

Thanks Morris! This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I
take the glip twice a day for a total of 5mg. I've noticed slightly
higher numbers in the morning if I forget to take the dose before
dinner but not really high enough to worry about.

I also have experienced mild lows (60-65) after having a couple
glasses of red wine before eating something. Now, I make sure I don't
drink on an empty stomach.
