| NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Among children who are genetically
| predisposed to develop type 1 diabetes, dietary consumption of omega-3
| fatty acids appears to reduce the risk of becoming diabetic, according
| to new research findings.
|
| Type 1 diabetes has a strong hereditary component, and it occurs when
| the immune system mistakenly attacks the islet cells in the pancreas
| that produce insulin.
|
| The new findings, reported in this week's Journal of the American
| Medical Association, show that this islet "autoimmunity" is curbed by
| high dietary levels of omega-3's in children with a family history of
| type 1 diabetes or who have a genetic pattern linked to the
| condition.
|
| "This suggests that in the future, after more research has been done,
| we may be able to develop nutritional based interventions to prevent
| type 1 diabetes," lead author Dr. Jill M. Norris, from the University
| of Colorado at Denver and Health Science Center, told Reuters Health.
