Well, Loretta, Sappho was a famous Greek poetess in the Classical period (c.
630 B.C.- 570 B.C.). She lived on the island of Lesbos. Although most of her
work is lost to us today, she was very well known and highly regarded in her
own time.
Hypatia, was a very well educated and influential woman for her time in
Alexandria, Egypt, and was renowned as a teacher, philosopher, astronomer,
astrologer, and mathematician. She lived circa 350-415 A.D. She was
murdered, because she was a pagan who did not embrace Christianity, and a
mob killed her.
Portia is a name I got from Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice".... Another
remarkable and strong woman, who saved the day.
I forgot to mention Emilie as a name that I thought of later... It would
have the advantage of being French.... One of the very great Emilies in
history was Emilie du Chatalet (1709-1749).... She was a close friend of
Voltaire and a remarkable scholar and scientist and mathematician of her
day. One of her greatest accomplishments was a work she wrote, based upon
the Principia Mathematica of Isaac Newton.... Two of her other publications
were Dissertation sur la nature et la propagation du feu, and Institutions
de Physique
One theory is that a child's name helps mould character.... Thus, a good
reason for giving a child a strong name with a certain distinctiveness in
history and literature. Of course, family tradition and culture count for a
lot, also....
