Re: Type 1's and heart disease (Re: Triglycerides for a Type 1?)

Tim, I wouldn't worry about tri's of 27! Mine are regularly around 50 & my
doctors are delighted -- but my LDL would not stay below 100 so I started
Lipitor (I think last year -- but time flies so it could be 2 yrs ago ;-)).
Reasonable diet (not low carb), plenty of exercise, good weight control (low
normal, maintained for 8 yrs since I lost 50 lbs after dm dx) -- still did
not drop my LDL, or for that matter my blood pressure, to desired levels,
thus the meds for both.

How's your HDL? At least mine did go up -- which also delights the doctors,
but not so much that they don't want me taking meds to lower the LDL.

My doc is mostly looking at the cholesterol panel and trying to get my
"bad" cholesterol even lower. It just so happens that triglycerides
fall in the cholesterol panel, and only after the last checkup did I
put two and two together and realize that all the posts here about
triglyceride numbers might have some relevance to me. I'm within the
reference range but given all the risk factors I have for heart
disease (diabetes is just one of many! In fact I pretty much have ALL
of them) he's being hyper-aggressive on them, probably with good
cause.
...
am actually very happy that my current doc is focusing on those
factors, and we've been working on them with great results for the
most part. He's hyper-aggressive about getting all the numbers not
only into the "normal" range but further, and that's the right way I
think.
....
He's having me take lipitor for my cholesterol numbers, and in fact
just upped it in dose. While my attempts at healthy eating and more
and more regular exercise have been paying off (lost 8 pounds over the
past 3 months - that's a lot for me!) in several of the lab tests, the
cholesterol numbers just haven't gone down despite all my healthy
efforts, sometimes they seem to go up in fact.
