Hi Jim,
Let me say I am impressed with the way you think... I have been
noticing your posts for a while now, and I admire your way of thinking
past the immediate subject of a study and advancing into a new
hypothesis... Of course, I have long respected Susan's abilities in
digging out the info. and putting some of her own thought into making
it relevant to us mired down in the daily suffering of diabetes.
You must be a very sharp man, Jim. I am glad you are here.
That's quite a welcome to this group. Thank you.
I've spent my career (so far) in science. I began as a physicist and wound
up as a cognitive and sometimes physiological psychologist. I've taught
statistics and experimental design and consulted in those areas, too. I've
done some research in some medically-related areas but have no clinical
experience or qualifications whatsoever.
I guess I should say why I am here...
Back in April I was trying to lose about ten pounds that I just couldn't
seem to take off. I knew Susan from another group, and she suggested maybe
testing my bg response to the foods I was eating. That made sense to me,
seeing as I am 63, and at least half of us that age are at least insulin
resistant.
I decided to run a homebrew glucose challenge test, got a meter, and finally
managed to stick myself and get a fasting reading. As I recall, it was 110
or so. That really shocked me. So, I went out and bought the worst plain
white bagel I could find, came home and choked down about 60 g of pure
starch. One hour later, I measured 170. At that point, I became pretty
anxious (keep out of this, Susan!). At two hours I was 200.
Anyway, I began testing regularly and adjusting my diet and such to control
the bg. Looking back, I'm pretty sure my 170 may have been somewhat elevated
from stress about the testing. And that goes double for the 200. But the
numbers sure weren't normal.
Three months later, my fbg has dropped from about 110 to about 80. My
post-prandials (1 hr) have improved a lot, but I'm not going to repeat my
glucose challenge test until I have an A1c reading in a few weeks. Today, my
highest reading was 1 hour post breakfast, and that was 87! I've lost the
ten pounds plus a few more. I'm at my high-school graduation weight. And
I've been spending extra time at the gym and upping my weights.
I *think* what has happened is that I almost accidentally discovered I was
pre-diabetic and then managed to "convert" to normal in about 14 weeks. If
that turns out to be the case, I owe a lot to some of the people here, to
"Jennifer," and most especially to Susan.
Anyway, I'll probably stick around. I have no axe to grind as to theories
and causes and treatments and such. I'm interested in learning.
And I can't hold a candle to Susan in terms of anything to do with DM...
Thanks for the warm (and most unusual) welcome.
