| An ADA med officer is urging labs to translate A1C results to a number
that
| corresponds to an average bg level along with the standard A1C reading.
The
| change is slated for 2008.
|
| The idea is to help diabetics better understand the A1c number in terms
of
| their meter.
|
| A lot of folks don't know what their A1c really means. According to one
| source, an A1c translates as follows:
|
| A1c ---Avg. BG (convert to mmol by dividing mg/dl by 18)
|
| 10------275 mg/dl
| 9--------240
| 8--------205
| 7--------170
| 6--------135
| 5--------100

Hate to tell ya, but that is incorrect. An A1C isn't calculated
out the same way as we get the mmol to mg or vise versa.
There is a different calculation for it. This probably is why there
is so much misinformation about A1C's. I'm in the middle of
swapping out drives and don't have excel loaded on this drive
so I can't pull out my *** to get the correct formula. But it's
the one I got from my Endo about 7yrs back and if I keep a
record of 95% of my readings, then my A1C comes out almost
if not exact to what's returned from the lab when I get a blood
draw. I've also done an excel *** that I can plug in my readings
and it will give me a running tally of what my A1C "should" be
at that particular reading.. helps to keep me focused.
