Going to dentist next week (first time in like 15 years). What do I need to
know/do? I have pre filled out the paperwork, and will make sure they know
I'm T2 diabetic. I have had a gum infection for about a year (no excuse
just was too scared to go). Facing it now, so what should I do? I think
they are just doing a first time routine exam and cleaning. My dental
insurance that I just started (blue cross blue shield for about $34 a month)
will cover things, but not until about 6 months for some...year for others.
The initial exam is covered, but when he sees my gums and teeth, I'm afraid
of what he will do. Not extremely bad, however the gum in front and a
couple places that look like cavities. I'm 41, and have NEVER had a cavity
or anything done on my teeth except for cleaning and my wisdom teeth out in
the dentist office in 1981...other than that, I have never had anything done
and I'm real nervous!
Thanks,

Good luck to you. If the dentist you are going to is worth anything
the first thing they will do after your initial appointment will be to
find out what you insurance will pay and when it will pay the most on
any procedures you need. Since it has been so long since your last
check-up and cleaning I would expect you will find out you do have
some cavities and probably periodontal disease (gum disease). They
will want to take care of those right away and get you on a schedule
of brushing and flossing your teeth every single day. Mine has me on a
prescription tooth paste with fluoride and a fluoride rinse that I use
at a different time of day. Hopefully you will not have to go through
gum surgery, but if you do it is best to get it taken care of before
you start losing teeth.
The dentist we had for a long time kept telling me that some day I was
going to need to have crowns on two or three of my lower teeth. When I
finally went to the University of Iowa College of Dentistry Clinic I
found out instead they needed to pull four of my lower teeth
immediately and then build a partial denture for me.
If I were into the American hobby of suing for malpractice I probably
could have sued my former dentist for a considerable amount of money.
Instead, since he was in his later 60s and very near retirement I just
went ahead with the treatment plan from the College of Dentistry.
Today I am on a maintenance program that calls for me having an exam
and cleaning every three months even though my insurance will only pay
for it every six months. At age 67 I am very fortunate to have saved
the teeth I have left.
I wish you all the best. Please keep us informed.

Americans killed in the occupation of Iraq as of June 21, 2007 is 3,546.
United Kingdom = 152 Other = 128.
How many more Americans must die to satisfy Bush's ego?
Let us all pray for Bush - God knows he needs it!
As of June 22, 2007 it has been 1514 days since Bush
while standing in front of the banner which was sent
to the ship by the White House saying MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
declared,"In the Battle of Iraq, the United States and our
allies have prevailed." IOW MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
Isn't Bush's "surge" of troops working well?
Pay attention to the frequency of American deaths since it began.
