Question:
Do I need flu and pneumonia shots?
Answer:
Whether to have influenza and pneumonia immunizations is a personal
decision. However, people over the age of 64 will usually benefit from
the protection of these injections. If flu or pneumonia are "in the
air," immunizations will prevent the illnesses or make them less
severe. Getting a flu shot is strongly recommended in September of
each year. The vaccine should not be used if you are allergic to
chicken eggs (the vaccine is prepared in a chicken egg environment) or
to other components of the vaccine, or in people with a past history
of Guillain-Barré syndrome (a rare nerve disorder occasionally linked
to immunizations).
The pneumonia vaccine protects against a relatively
common type, pneumococcal pneumonia. A one-time dose of vaccine is
recommended for people over the age of 64. If you got a dose before
age 65, a one-time re-vaccination is recommended. Almost half of the
people receiving this injection will have flu-like side effects
lasting up to two days.
my endo and the literature he handed out says once every 5 years
starting at a much younger age than recommended here.
In Australia the recommendations are for the young, the elderly, diabetics
and those with suppressed immune systems etc. As far as I am aware it is
still only the people 65 or over (49 if indigenous) who are entitled to free
shots.
