Question:
I'm retired and on a tight budget. Can I cut my diabetes pills in
half?
Answer:
If you're a thrifty medical consumer, you've probably thought of
buying pills containing larger doses of medication, and then just
using the portion you need, so you can save money on prescription
prices.
However, there are some things you should know. If you just break the
pill, the pieces may not contain the same amount of medication and may
not work the same way. Pills that are "scored," meaning they have a
line cut into them, and that do not have a special coating, may be
broken along the line, and both halves will have the same amount of
medication. However, a shiny tablet without a line in it or a capsule
might not work correctly if you break it in two.
The coating on the pill may be necessary to control how fast or where
the pill is absorbed in your body. Leave shiny, unscored pills as they
are, unless you ask your pharmacist if it is okay to break the pills
into pieces.
Kurt, go put your construction hard hat on because you are going to
get
all kinds of slurs and attacks from the know-it-alls that will
chastise you
for posting the ADA's excellent content.
Now that you wrote that they will remain silent just to prove you
wrong. Thank you!
Kurt
