Ray, i certainly have to agree that metformin is
one of the 'first meds' that a diabetic should be
given, because of it's diabetes effects, the
weight loss effect (i had no gastro problems from
the metformin, but i easily lost 10 to 15 pounds
from Nov to the beginning of April), and it's
cardio protective abilities

FWIW - metformin is one of the most frequentlyprescribed diabetes oral
meds - you didn't mention if you're on it. Ithas a tendency to help with
the weight loss to some degree - probablybecause it causes some level of
gastric difficulty. Since I was diagnosed inJune 2005, I have lost 20
pounds with metformin, exercise and diet. Don'tknow where you live, but
I'll pass along one interesting tidbit - all thesources I can find
indicate that showshoeing burns about twice thecalories of hiking.
