What scares you about diabetes?I'd like to comment on this very well put statement.
Mine is going blind and depending on others - scares me to death.
When I see something that temps me I force myself to think of that,
being dependant, as the price for that indulgence.
So far I am unwilling to pay the price - cross my fingers.
Everyday I want to smoke a pack of cigarettes, eat a crispy buttery
baked potato skin or have a juicy water mellon all to myself rather
than a few chunks.
There isn't a day that goes by that I'd rather sleep in and skip
exercise.
I'd much rather not bugger myself stupid riding my bicycle to and from
work almost daily, and I'd much rather have a hearty breakfast and
lunch than the meagre morsels I do have. Like you, I think of the
ultimate consequences.
Within hours of getting on the mhd newsgroup in 1995 I had this "kick
in the teeth" - the realisation exactly what could happen to me if I
slacked off on exercise and indulged with food. It has kept me true
most of the time.
I take 20 units of Lantus in the evening, and a 9 unit shot of
Novorapid before dinner.

Stay true Henry.
You might get a kick out of this trick I play every morning of late. The
last 2 months I have let my son take my car to work until he can buy his
own. Since my wife works just a few miles away she drives me out to the
main road at 6 am drops me off and drives to work. I then walk to her
office and pick up the car.
If I chose to take the the short walk back home it would take me over a
road packed with mad rush hour drivers who would have no problem running
me over if they could save a few seconds of time.
I know this because I have tried to go back home a few times. So I have
no choice but to walk the three miles to the car.
Maybe I should give my son the car.
