Ok maybe you all can help me understand how to do this stuff.Di,
I am on Lantus 100 units before bed. I am on Novolog 40 three times a
day with meals.
Now at this time which is almost 12:30 am I am 266 and I finished
eating almost four hours ago.
So my question is I am still going to take the Lantus 100 units but how
much Novolog would I take to bring me to normal by morning. I try to do
sliding scale by myself but in the mornings I am higher than when I
went to bed.
TIA
To get down to proper levels, you probably have to take at least 35
units of Novolog.
I wouldn't take that with out as lot of experience in adjusting your own
dosage.
Your doctor is obviously one of those control freaks who doesn't teach
his patients how to do their own adjusting. Been there, done that.
Tell your doctor that he is an incompetent jerk!
With your history, possibly 50 would be needed, but, I would try 20
units and check again in two hours..
The rule of the thumb is 1 unit for every 4 points. Start out trying
one unit for every 10 points, and following up after 2 hours.. Then
keep creeping up the dosage till you can get to 120 consistently. Then
stay at that formula for a month or two and CAREFULLY move your target
down to 115. Again, work with that for a month or two and then move
your target down to 110.
warnings:
1) Be sure of your readings, if you get an unusually high spike recheck
your meter readings and do NOT raise your dosage too high unless you
KNOW why you spiked.
2) Keep your meter handy and sugared soda in case you go hypo, Hypos
are not good, but if you can get very good control with only an
occasional hypo, GREAT. Much better than never getting a hypo by always
being hyper.
Hi Ted !!! good to see you. Thanks for your help and I saved your post.
I didn't get this last night and wish I had. I took close to 10 units of
the novolog with the Lantus different sites of course and when I went to
bed I was 205 I think it was and woke to a 218.
Now if I eat I will go higher and make for a sleepy day again.
I will do what you said. I know now what I did wrong. I thought I read
here long ago it was 1 unit per 10 that I wanted to come down and I
wasn't giving enough.
You are right about the doctor. I took everyone's advise and went to see
an Endocrinologist and per request of my PCP and I get told there is
nothing more they can do for my diabetes. The PCP rolled his eyes when I
told him that and said that sounded strange coming from a specialist and
I agreed.
Thanks and am saving this so I won't forget.
I will let you all know how it works in a couple days.
Lente used to be GREAT for dawn, but it is no longer made. I wouldn't
adjust Lantus without a LOT of experience.
You should take more novolog in the morning to knock your spikes down. BE
CAREFUL*L. as I said for your evening, try a little and check the
results. After a few months, you will have a good handle on what reaction
you get from what dose.
Beware, it is NOT a simple thing, some day you will take 30 units and it
will go UP, another day, you will unexpectedly go hypo. but, with
experience, 95% of the time you will be able to nail it on the dot.
actually really fill the syringe full to the max so it may be about 110
units.
I will do as you suggest on the morning one.
Tomorrow I am going to try once again to follow a better way of eating and
do the suggestions that you and Reisa and others have given and see how I do
since I won't get blood work again for three months I hope to be doing
better by then.
I hope you and the others don't mind but I may have more questions about the
insulin doses because the Endo I am seeing doesn't want me going higher and
says no more can be done for me so I take it she is leaving me to die.
