Hi,
I've been lurking here off and on for over five years and have learned
a lot. I hope I can get some good practical advice now for my problem.

I'm 75 years old, type 2, diagnosed in 1998. I'm managing pretty good
control. My A1C is usually 5.7 -6.0.

My wife is 74. We've been married 42 years and have a very, very happy
marriage. Our love is very alive, active, passionate. You get the idea.

My problem is that my wife continues to buy things she thinks I will
like for desert or snacks. They are "no sugar added" bakery items
generally. I've explained they will be no sugar added but will be high
in fat. I also stressed the temptation for me is sometimes too much and
I eat too much of it. She understands but continues sporadically to do
it.

The other problem is that if she is eating something during or after
dinner she still offers some to me. I've told her many times to stop
doing it but she continues. Yesterday she was eating pretzels and
offered me some. I told her they spike me and I didn't want any. I've
told her many time to stop offering. If I want something I'll ask for it.

She said she does it because she loves me and feels bad about eating
something I like in front of me. She doesn't want to be rude to me. I
told her the effects on me of the things she buys or offers me, and she
understands. But continues to say she feels bad eating things I can't
eat.

I don't know how to stop her from it. I told her it's like sabotaging
me, which she insists she isn't trying to do. I feel like a victim of
her old fashioned manners and considerations.

Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks!

I know your wife is trying to do this out of love as I was brought up not to
eat in front of people too.

But now I have diabetes and that is another ball game. My husband does to me
what your wife does to you. I haven't been able to stop him either.

My only suggestion is to just politely tell her "Dear I have diabetes and I
do not want to lose my legs or my eyes to this disease so please do not
offer me things you KNOW I am not allowed to have or that spikes my blood
sugars.

Food may say no added sugar but usually I have found that it means only
that. There is sugar already in it naturally but just no added.

I can't advise much because I live in the same situation and my husband
knows I don't and won't drive to buy that type food so I eat what is given
me. Now I suffer with very bad eyes, constant kidney infections and
neuropathy in my hands, feet and legs and goodness knows where else. In fact
with my high numbers I am a walking heart attack or stroke waiting to
happen.

I wish you well and I hope others here can guide you better than I. I really
just wanted to say I am glad you delurked and told a little about yourself
and it is nice to meet you online and I wish you all the best.
