Maybe I could be wrong, but could Encarta? Below is an excerpt from The
Encarta Encyclopedia.
Like assembly languages, all high-level languages must first be translated
into machine code before they can be run by a computer. To accomplish
this,
programmers use various types of utility programs, such as compilers,
assemblers, linkers, and debuggers, which help them translate high-level
language into machine code. The computer code used to write a program is
called source code before being translated into machine code, and object
code after it has been translated.
Hi Don,
Some of us had to learn the most basic machine code... Outside of
Fortran and Cobol, my first experience with "computer languages" was
in chasing ones and zeroes... We did all of that by hand and brute
force in the early days.
In my early Navy days, I spent many an all-nighter chasing ones and
zeroes. Seriously, it could be argued that people chasing ones and
zeroes actually saved the "free world"....
Let's just try to be kind to each other....
Will, T2
I too learned computer programming by brute force.
I did it on my own when computer memory measured in Kbytes instead of the
Mbytes available today.
Each keystroke had to count and programming was a pain in the ***, but fun.
I am a far cry from being a computer expert, but I don't need to be. Where
as in the old days there was very little software available and one has to
write their own code, today you can find just about any kind of program you
need with very little effort or money
I could say many negative things about many people on the newsgroup, but I
will take your advice and leave those unkind words unsaid, at least for now.
I will be spending most of my time during the next couple of months out
campaigning for the Democratic Party.
Hopefully, when I return at least some of the know nothing, know it alls
will be gone.
This is one newsgroup where such people can cause much damage to many
others.
