You don't exactly "get a firewall" from MS because you went seeking
it.
Most US computers come with it already there. You must turn it off
and install your own choice in firewall software to get something
else.
Most people don't do that.

actually "most" people do use a third party firewall because "most"
people know that MS's firewall is horribly inadequate.

You left out something between "most" and "people" -
"computer savvy".

The vast majority (thus most) of computer users wouldn't
have the faintest idea what a third party firewall is.
Before this conversation I was in that group - and I
probably still am to a large degree.

Alan, if your not downloading/posting music or videos or warez or
terror
plots then you'll be ok with Zone Alarm and any virus package.

Thanks Gene:-)

I tend to wander through Pubmed, Highwire, Medscape et al.
Not really into videos and music - although there are an
increasing number of medical sites with video presentations
these days. I download the occasional joke video that people
post here and elsewhere.

I'll keep plodding along. I've downloaded ZA and am in the
15 day full trial mode. I'll drop to the free version to
continue at the end. I've noticed an increase in the "page
not found" messages since installing it. I click on retry
and up they come. Something from ZA is affecting things
there but I can live with that.

I update AVG daily and update and run AdAware every couple
of days.

No Sweat, Alan. I hope I don't read a story of a diabetic from downunder
caught with a nuclear powered BBQ and uploading the plans to an Iranian
Chef in North Korea.
