Like I said before, I don't agree with everything in the ADAPS. I believe that low carbing does work for T2's, but if it were prescribed for all T2's it would be doomed to failure. It would not work because 90% of the patients would not stay on it very long if at all. Recommendations for the treatment of the masses (of diabetics) must be something that will work for the majority of the patients.
The trouble is that a lot of what is currently being said about T2's is that they are non-compliant.. and that's with the current recommendations.
So if the reason that they're not prescribing a lowered carb approach is because they feel patients would not stay on it very long, if at all... well, their current prescription also seems to have that issue.
The current recommendations will work and be tolerated by some.
Lowered carb will work and be tolerated by others.
Both have a place in our arsenal. All that matters is that everyone finds some way that works for them.
If I ran the zoo, I would have both plans at the ready to offer new T2s... then it could be determined which plan was working and which plan was "followable" to the individual.
If one plan didn't cut it, the other might. That way there's a better chance of finding the one that works both for control and compliance. Success breeds success.
If I were a T2, I would be on a low(er) carb diet in the 80-90 carb/day range. If I couldn't keep tight control at that level I would add metformin. If I still couldn't keep tight control I would add insulin. That's my position on T2 control.
I'm with you Sarah... and as a T2, lowered carbs and 1500mg of Metformin is what's kept me in tight control for the 7 years since dx. I've been on the same dose of Met since the get go, and I plan on taking advantage of all the tools at my disposal, including insulin, if/when my control becomes harder to maintain. I'm 47 and I've hopefully got a long healthy diabetic future ahead of me.
I'm thankful those options are out there. And with luck, they'll keep working on more.
