Re: Byetta and GI effects

Amy, do be careful of the kinds of food you eat and the quantities. That
can contribute to the problems you describe. Remember that anything you eat
now sits in your stomach longer than usual and then slowly passes through.
Stuff that you might have been fine with before can get you now. For
instance don't eat strong flavors like bacon or dill pickles or they will
stay with you for hours (if you burp you'll know what I mean and be amazed
how long the flavors can hang around...). That can tend to make you a bit
nauseous. Also foods that are spicy don't do as well with me now as they
did before. Another thing is quantity, too much will give you all sorts of
things happening.

In nine months of being on Byetta I've only ever felt nausea about 3 or 4
times and EVERY time was my own fault for eating too much or something
really hard to digest. As an example you said you ate a sandwich. Was it a
sandwich folded over (one slice) or was it two full slices of bread? I'll
tell you this, when I started Byetta I was a 5 foot 9 inch male, weighed 209
(was overweight even with my muscular build) and for almost two months I
could never have finished more than one half of a two slice (full) sandwich.
In fact just today I got all excited about the fresh lettuce and tomatoes I
was getting from my garden and fixed a two slice sandwich for my second meal
today. I don't know why I did it, still just the anticipation of how good
it was going to taste I guess. I only finished just about one bite more
than half and had to throw the rest away. Thats after being on Byetta for
nine months and now weighing 178 (my minimum weight goal). Also I do not
eat three meals in a day. I have breakfast and dinner (both easy on
quantity) and one snack (but not a third meal).

Also watch out for fatty foods, those don't digest well either. Other
Byetta users report that eating deep fried foods tends to give them a 'brick
in the stomach' feeling.

If you stick with almost anything else other than things I've mentioned to
watch out for you should improve.

For the first two weeks at least my suggestion is keep the food simple and
moderately bland and really control the portions until you figure out what
is right for you with Byetta on board.

Oh and another thing to watch for is the sugar free type foods that have
lots of sugar alcohols. I used to get along very well with those but now on
Byetta I notice that I have to be a little more careful. Overdoing those
will give you gas and diarrhea pretty easily.

Well.. this morning I felt a bit better after an hour and a half or so,
but
I've felt queasy all day, and the thought of eating makes me sick.
I had to force down a pb & sugar-free j sandwich with my evening dose..
maybe this is where the weight loss side effect comes in?
Anyway, I'll keep ya posted.

Amy
