I'm getting two puppies (I'm nuts, I know) soon and I plan to cook for
them. The recipe I'm using is from a friend and sounds very much like
yours. Slight difference is that this starts with a layer of brown rice
in the bottom of the roaster then add finely chopped veggies and lay an
inexpensive cut of meat on top of that, add water to cover the rice. Put
the lid on and bake for 4 or 5 hours. Take the meat off the bone and
then mix it all together. My friend just varies the meat, chicken,
turkey, lamb shank, roast. No pork - although some of their home made
treats may have a little bacon. Their dogs are so fit and healthy. The
oldest is only about 8 though so that may not speak to changing nutrition
needs as dogs age. It sure sounds like your dogs are getting very
healthy food.

It's been 20 years since we've had a dog and I didn't have time to cook
for any pets way back then. Now, I look forward to it.

Best - Barbara

you just might be nuts lol. I have 3 dogs the oldest is Cookie (5lbs
Yorkie)- i think is now 18. i have been saying 17 for about a year and
sorry to say we much has missed her bd :(. then there is the dog from
hell Valerie (5lbs yorkie) around 15 and the baby Mini Pincher Jennifer is
about 13. i am thinking for my oldest dog that perhaps the lower gi of
whole grain rye might be a better choice.
these days i am wondering how much calcium and fiber is recommended. for
the red meat i mostly ask the butcher to grind up a lean Roast beef. I
have also loved to use that lean meat for burgers it tastes great and is
very juicy. i sometimes ad nuts and stuff it all they are getting is
skinless chicken breast.
I had a third Yorkie named Luigi but he died as a puppy when he got into
the garbage and got a hold of a broken turkey leg :(. at that time i only
had cookie we were going to mate them and keep the puppies. Cookie and
Luigi used to play tugawar with with socks. the night after Luigi died
cookie was running around the house with a sock in her mouth crying
looking for Luigi.
that broke my heart. i think cookie is in her last year. while we
always made sure we had a terrace or out door space so the dogs can go
anytime. i think it would have been very unhealthy to expect them to hold
it in all day. these days she pees everyplace. i dont scold her or
anything, i cant it would be like yelling at a 100 year old lady.

Once again I think I've replied to the sender and not the group. I'm trying
this again .....

I'm getting miniature dachshunds from two different litters. Haven't been
born yet. My friends won't tell me when they are due - I think they are
afraid I'll back out. But I won't. I'm getting rather anxious. I figure
I've got a couple of months to prepare the house for puppies. I'm having a
fence installed and buying a few necessities each week. Have cleaned out
one kitchen drawer and one lower cabinet section.

When I lost my Shadow (a standard poodle) he was 18 yrs. old and was so much
a part of the family it was really hard. I know what you're facing and it
sounds like you have a very tender heart to handle the health impacts that
come with their old age. Good for you. Cookie is, I'm sure, a very lucky &
happy dog. I guess you've probably read the "Rainbow Bridge" poem ?? It's
on line if you haven't seen it. I can't re-read it because I cry! Oh
brother!!

My nephew just rescued a min-pin named Bella. She is the sweetest little
dog. She can show such a fierce stance - it's really comical. Then when
you talk sweet to her that tail wags and she comes running. She's getting
use to us all and also getting use to their beagle and cat. He doesn't
know how old she is but the vet thinks she may be 3 or 4. We live in a
university town and sadly, every year there are a number of students and
families who leave and either abandon their pets or like Bella's family,
some do look for new homes.
