I've had a bit of a sad day, due to bringing my mom-in-law from the
Alzheimers Unit to have lunch at my house. She really is in very bad
shape, frightens easily, doesn't know us, and slept most of the time at
the table, but my sis-in-law and I were able to visit. It's hard to see
her that way, but after taking her back, I saw that attorney joke that a
friend had sent, and it gave me a chuckle. I thought after the stress
you've been under, you could use a chuckle too. Have a great evening
Will. I still haven't seen you on TV, but am still looking. :-)
Sorry to hear about your mother-in-law, Cheri...
I know that has got to take a toll upon your whole family. One of my
grandmothers had what we now believe to have been Alzheimers, although
at the time (1960s) rhey did not know what Alzheimers really was. The
doctors just thought she was having a series of "pin-head" strokes,
resulting in a progressively worsening demential...
In the end, she did not recognize anyone, did not know who she was,
where she was, and was completely helpless and bedridden... It is an
absolutely horrible wasting disease.
As you may be aware, there are now some indications of a possible
connection between diabetes, hyperglycemia, and alzheimers. That is
one reason why I posted that abstract yesterday about the study
concerning findings relating to hyerglycemia and impaired cognition in
older adults. Also, as you know, there is now thought to be a genetic
component in the causation of T2 diabetes, as well as a connection
between diabetes and alzheimers. There are also ongoing studies as to
a possible linkage between the formation of the amyloid plaques
associated with Alzheimers and hyperglycemia. From where I sit, having
had a number of close family members who had diabetes, and a
grandmother who likely had alzheimers, there are very compelling
reasons to maintain very tight control over blood glucose, quite apart
from considerations of retinopathy, neuropathy, cardio-vascular
disease, renal failure, fungal infections, peripheral artery disease.
etc.
I had a good evening, last night, once I got home... fell asleep in my
chair after dinner and two martinis at about 9:00 P.M.
Here's wishing you a very good day. :-)
Will, T2
