Re: High Blood Sugar: Insulin vs Reducing Carb Intake or Excercise

Very interesting. I didn't realize exercising could be a problem.
Clearly I have lots to learn. Does it make a differrence if the
exercise is a leisurely walk as apposed to some brisk type of exercise?

But you'll need to make sure your mom's blood sugar is in a safe range
before she exercises. Otherwise it could actually make them worse. She
should never start exercising if her blood sugar is, say, over 200 mg/dl.

What's the problem with that? Isn't it a fairly quick way of pulling
the BG down? I don't do that any more, simply because I don't get to
200 any more, but in the old pre-diagnosis days I probably exercised
at least once every other day with a BG higher than 200 mg/dl, e.g.,
having a bowl of muesli before cycling to work.

If you have "enough insulin" trickling into your blood, it works very
well. That's the way I do it. I can easily knock my bG down by well
over 100 points in an hour.

The problem is "enough insulin". I inject a Corrective Bolus, wait
till it starts trickling in, then have at it. However, if you can't
guarantee "enough insulin", you can get into trouble, e.g. a vicious
circle:

1. Something happens to raise your blood sugar
2. At high bG, our Insulin Resistance goes up, and T2 insulin
production is suppressed
3. Now you're really messed up;

a. You need more insulin to handle the problem,
b. T1 are using their last injection less efficiently
c. T2 are actually making less
d. And neither had enough around in the first place

4. Then you exercise, and your liver responds by dumping glucose into
your blood!

#2 is a YMMV situation. I see the boost in Insulin Resistance immediately
and it sticks around for a bit after I defeat the high bG.
