I think an appropriate phrase would be: "Armchair physician heal

Sometimes this place feels like amazon.com with all the shilling for
Atkins and Bernstein.

Well, Kurt... I would not call it shilling, so much as I would say
that people become convinced of a truth or the validity of something
they have come to apply in their own lives... It is human nature to
want to reaffirm that one has made and is making the right choice.
Psychologists regularly demonstrate that once people become convinced
of a proposition, they get a kind of mental/emotional stake in that
decision... Indeed, that is a principle of trial advocacy that I
employ in jury trials. It is far more difficult to persuade someone
that he/she is wrong than persuading them to a proposition in the
first instance. That is also part of the basis of the saying, "you
never get a second chance to make a good first impression."
Also, remember there is that little "god" in most of us that just
loves to be right and in control. No one likes to be told they are
wrong, even when they are wrong... Being able to feel that one is
right can be a very delicious thing, especially when it is at the
expense of someone else who is in opposition.... who may also have a
valid claim to truth.
Personally, I believe the truth is that Atkins and Bernstein are on to
something good for many of us, especially those of with metabolic
syndrome (syndrome x) and T2 diabetes... but their plan is too
draconian for a lot of people, and perhaps not for everyone. In the
end, we all have to make our own choices... and we, the afflicted, are
in charge of how we combat diabetes as it manifests in us. Our doctors
are advisors, to be sure, and we should listen to what they have to
say. But in the end, the basic decisions of how to live our lives are
our own.
