Re: A Type II Camp?

If you were asked to plan a sort of "total immersion" summer camp for Type
II adults who were either newly diagnosed or failing to follow their
doctor's treatment plan what elements of a program would you include?

I would simply refuse to do it because I fail to see how that sort of thing
would help. A newly diagnosed person might not be the same as one who fails
to follow advice. If they are going to fail to follow advice they are going
to fail, camp or no camp. They're going to be the ones who sneak off to buy
candy bars or pizza.

I also don't think a camp setting would be the best idea either because
really diabetes is very much an individual thing. You couldn't even come up
with camp meals that would work for everyone. Some people simply need more
carbs than others. And then there's the matter of some foods working for
some people and not others.

I would still make sure the patient got an individual consult with a
dietician. But I would also make sure the patient knew this was just a
starting point and I would tell them what they needed to do on their own to
come up with a diet that works for them.

As for treatment plans, I've never had a Dr. give me one. They prescribe
meds and that's about the extent of it. One Dr. recommended swimming to me,
failing to remember that I have a problem with bad veins in my legs,
rendering me crippled if I take off the compression hose I wear. Now
perhaps if I had my own pool in my own backyard, I could manage to get in
and out of it, keeping the stockings nearby. But even then, it's not
something I'd be likely to do because I flat out hate swimming!
