My sister had said surgery several years ago, and I helped her do a lot of homework before she interviewed surgeons.
The absolute best referral you can get, whether it's an orthopedic or neuro doc, is from a physical therapist. Ask yours whose patients do the best post op; the therapists get to see and evaluate the measurable results in terms of function and remaining pain.
