This time my A1c was 5.6%, which is the lowest it has been in a couple years. It's.2% lower than the one in March after I started the basal and .4% lower than back in November.
I was not sure what to expect. I was having a lot of trouble with my stash of Ultralente going bad--resulting in some extremely high postprandial numbers just the week before, so I suspect that my overall control may have been a bit better than the 5.6% would suggest . In the past, high numbers near the time of testing have pushed up my A1c significantly.
Still, I'm pretty happy. Low carbing carefully with metformin, the best I could do was 5.7% (and that was with the rising fasting blood sugars which are now a thing of the past.)
Even better, my triglycerides were lower than before at 94 and my HDL was 67. What was important here is that now that I'm using the insulin and can avoid spiking I've been eating a lot more carbs, so I was concerned that the carbs might have messed up my triglycerides. Instead they dropped.
That suggests to me that it is the bg spikes that push up the triglycerides, rather than the actual amount of carb eaten.
My overall cholesterol at 272 was low for me--without meds or a low carb diet it is usually around 310. Since I have that genetic form of very large fluffy LDL associated with longevity, that's a decent number--though I always have to go through an argument with the doctor on this topic.

Jenny, I know it's been a long, hard and frustrating road to these improvements, so mazel tov on your detective work, your new regimen and those results!
